SS3 feels more transcendental, to the point that the only other character we see achieve it in the original series is Gotenks, a magically-created Fusion of two immensely powerful half-Saiyans who'd already reached regular SS from a young age. It's not like SS Grades II and III, where it's essentially just powering up the regular SS form.
I mean, yeah, Goku would probably have better sparring partners in Gohan or Vegeta (since he mentioned that there was no-one on his level in the afterlife hence why he'd never used Metamoran Fusion himself), but as you say, it'd be more beneficial for him to just strengthen and master his SS2 than try to ascend to a practically useless SS3 form.ītw, one of the reasons why I believe Goku might not have even been able to reach SS3 if not for being dead is because Vegeta never reached SS3 (as far as we know), even though - according to Goku himself - he'd trained harder than Goku did in the afterlife. That's if you assume that achieving SS3 is just about power, and not, like, building up stamina and stuff. Training with Gohan and/or Vegeta would, in my opinion, make him considerably stronger for when Shin and Kibito appear contrasted to his canon strength, alongside additionally making Gohan and Vegeta stronger. For instance, if he lived then he could have regularly trained with Gohan or Vegeta.
